Raghurajpur – a village in Puri

Raghurajpur is a village situated 14 km away from the Hindu pilgrimage town of Puri, India. I have been working on this photo project there for the last two years.

This place is famous for its exquisite and breath-taking artwork where every house is an artisan’s workshop.

As you stroll through the village, you will find various handcrafted items such as Pattachitra paintings, wooden toys, traditional mask, paintings on tassar, sari, etc.

The pattachitra paintings are made on a cloth known as Patta or a dried palm leaf and adorned with colourful and intricate pictures of gods and goddesses, mythological scenes with ornamentation of flowers, trees and animals.

No doubt the village is a treat for the art lovers. The villagers are very simple by nature. It comes as no surprise that each house is painted with multifarious designs of mythological events which are very colourful.

Raghurajpur is a must-see on your itinerary if you are ever in the region.
